Important Tips for First-Time Travelers to America

The skyscrapers, endless roads, and iconic landscapes you see in movies are now just a plane ticket away. The United States of America is not just a country, but a gigantic adventure the size of a continent. However, to ensure this adventure does not turn into a nightmare, there are some "American standards" you need to pay attention to that differ from your travels in Europe or Asia.

Your America Guide has compiled the most critical tips you need to know to make your journey easier before packing your suitcase.

1. First Encounter with Passport Control (CBP)

When you get off the plane, you will be greeted by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, which is the part of the process that seems the most stressful but is the simplest when rules are followed.

  • Have Your Return Ticket Ready: The officer will want to know when you plan to return and where you will be staying. Have printed copies of your accommodation address and return flight ticket with you.
  • Put Your Phone Down: It is prohibited to play on your phone or take photos while waiting in line.
  • Stay Calm: Provide short, clear, and honest answers to questions like "Why are you here?" and "How long will you stay?"

2. Pay Attention to Plug and Voltage Differences!

Unlike Europe, the electrical system in America is completely different.

  • Plug Type: In America, two flat prongs (Type A) or two flat and one round prong (Type B) plugs are used. Your plugs from Turkey will not fit here. Make sure to get a converter (adapter) before you go.
  • Voltage: While Turkey uses 220V, the US operates on 110V. Phone and computer chargers are generally compatible (they usually state 110-220V), but devices like hair dryers might not work.

3. Tipping is Not Optional, It’s a Rule

While tipping in Turkey can be an amount "from the heart," in America, it is the backbone of the service sector. Waiters and service staff earn a significant part of their income from tips.

  • Restaurants: It is standard to leave a tip of 18% to 22% of the bill. Not leaving a tip is considered very rude.
  • Taxis and Services: Giving tips of $2-5 to taxi drivers, porters, or hotel staff is also expected.

4. Don’t Be Misled by Price Tags (Tax Surprise)

If a store has a price tag of $100, you will pay more at the register. In America, Sales Tax is not included in the sticker price and will be added at checkout. Additionally, this tax rate varies from state to state (and even city to city).

5. Don’t Underestimate Distances

America is much larger than it appears on the map. Saying "I’ll have breakfast in New York and go to Miami by evening" is like saying you can go from Istanbul to London.

  • Use Flights: Internal flights are generally preferred for intercity travel.
  • Car Rental: Apart from city centers like New York or San Francisco, America is truly a "car country." Public transportation can be inadequate in many areas. Don’t forget to bring your driving license (Turkish licenses are generally valid for short-term tourists).

6. Travel Health Insurance: "A Must"

Please don’t skip this item. The healthcare system in America is one of the most expensive in the world. A simple check-up or emergency room visit can cost thousands of dollars. Our recommendation as Your America Guide is not to travel without comprehensive travel health insurance.

7. Internet and Communication

Using your own phone (Roaming) can lead to very high bills.

  • eSIM Technology: If your phone supports it, getting temporary tourist packages (eSIM) from apps like Airalo or local operators (T-Mobile, AT&T) before you go is the most economical solution.
